Information on Tatting

Tatting comes in different shapes and colors. It is an art where you can become inspired and creative. It is a craft done by hand that requires accuracy, patience and persistence. Whether you want to do a heart, an angel, a Christmas wreath, a butterfly, a cross or a star, it can turn out the perfect gift for someone on any occasion.

Tatting is the process of making a lace by using one shuttle, two or more shuttles. There are two types of tatting, needle tatting and shuttle tatting. The shuttle can be metal or plastic, oval shaped or pointed. The needle is usually long metal, but comes with various designs. In the first one, you pull the stitches off over the eye of the needle on the thread. It is important to support the stitches on the needle. Although it sounds complicated it is not as hard as the shuttle tatting. In here, the shuttle is used to move the loop onto the other thread, by moving the shuttle back and forth.

Although tatting is used as a contemporary crafting, adding a little touch to various decorations, it has its roots deep in the history. Even though the exact date when tatting started is unknown, it is believed to be in the end of the 19th century and beginning of the 20th century. Despite the fact that tatting can be self taught, there are various sources of information to help you succeed and advance in this type of art.
