Holiday Crafts

When you were a child in school, how many holidays in the year did your teacher decorate for? At this time of year in December and November, we think of the winter holidays, but there are many holidays we can do crafts for. Valentine’s Day is a big one when we were in school with all the hearts decorating the cafeteria and classroom windows and chalk boards. Easter was a fine holiday to do crafts for. We could make paper eggs and decorate the walls and windows.

When the children of the early settlers did holiday crafts they used the materials at hand. Pumpkins, pine cones, fall leaves and anything they could find and had handy. Many make paper garlands for the Christmas tree and strung berries and popcorn to drape over the tree.

Today many make jewelry, ceramic and cloth craft items. Some make Christmas or Thanksgiving earrings and necklaces, ceramic Christmas trees and Santa Clause or turkey centerpieces. Others use fall leaves to make pictures and centerpieces in an oversize lamp chimney. Some like homemade crafts that last so you might make some ornaments for a holiday that is made of durable material. Plastic, clay or beads among others. You can make something from cloth materials such as a table covering or a wall hanging that depicts the holiday. Such a craft shows how much you care about the person receiving the craft. The time you spent making the craft items the more it shows you care to give the best you can.
