Rubber stamping is a craft in which some type of ink made of dye or pigment is applied to an image or pattern that has been carved, molded, laser engraved or vulcanized, onto a sheet of rubber. The process consists of the rubber being mounted onto a more stable object such as a wood, brick or an acrylic block to produce a more solid instrument. Once the process is complete the ink of the rubberstamp is then pressed onto any type of medium such that the colored image that has now been transferred to the medium.
You must keep in mind that usually the medium part of it is generally some type of fabric or paper and the other media that is used with it is wood, metal, glass, plastic, rock along with High volume batik which uses liquid wax instead of ink on a metal stamp. Rubberstamping gained its popularity as an art form in the United States. A lot of People choose to carve their own rubber stamps, either of old-fashioned gum erasers or eraser-like rubber.
Keep in mind that some companies like Speedball or MasterCarve will supply carving sets to amateurs who want to carve their own rubber stamps that include gouge-like instruments. The rubber that is used for that particular activity is often said to be the easiest to use but can also mimic woodcuts. That's why so many people enjoy it. With this in mind the print from the carved rubber stamp is often viewed as work of art on its own, along with one or more stamps which are then used to embellish a work of art with other components.
